Meet the Fibbersons

The Fibbersons are the family in Lie of Sight: Dad, the Kid, Grandma, Rex the dog and Fibs the cat. They love each other, and they fib. In every case each of them says what they saw, and one of them is lying. To catch them you need to know how each one sees, because each has exactly one rule.

Dad

Tall, steady and proud of noticing things. He’s also the first to find a good reason for a second slice of cake.

How Dad sees

Sees his whole row and column. Walls and tall things block what's behind them.

When you’re hunting the liar: If Dad saw something, it’s somewhere along his row or column, with no wall or anything tall in between.

The Kid

Small, quick and usually somewhere near the cookies. Being short has its uses: he fits under the table.

How the Kid sees

Sees his whole row and column, but he's short: low things block him too, like tables, sofas, the cake and the vase. He can crawl under tables and sofas, but others still see him there.

When you’re hunting the liar: Count the low things too. A sofa or a table between them hides it from the Kid, even when Dad would see it.

Grandma

She knits, she bakes, and up close she misses nothing. Past two squares it’s a pleasant blur, and she’d rather you didn’t mention it.

How Grandma sees

Sees all 8 directions, but only 2 tiles. Walls and tall things block her. She can peek around a corner only if she could step around it.

When you’re hunting the liar: Her stories are the tightest in the game. If she saw it, it was no more than two squares away.

Rex

A happy dog with a waggy tail and a very good nose. He can’t see a thing, and he doesn’t need to.

How Rex sees

Can't see. Smells the 8 tiles around him, through walls and furniture.

When you’re hunting the liar: Walls and furniture don’t stop his nose. If he smelled it, it was right beside him.

Fibs

The family cat, named for how little she can be trusted. A quiet, judging witness who never looks at anything straight on. You’ll meet her in the Cat Files.

How Fibs sees

Fibs never looks at anything straight on. She watches along her four diagonals, as far as they go. Walls and tall things block her; low things don't.

When you’re hunting the liar: Her own row and column are blind spots. Low things don’t stop her; walls and tall things do.

Questions people ask

Who is the liar in Lie of Sight?

Can anyone see through walls?

No one sees through walls. Only Rex gets past them, because he goes by smell: he smells the eight squares around him, walls or not.
