What makes Clues by Sam work, and what to look for

Clues by Sam gives you a grid of 20 suspects, each either innocent or a criminal. Sort one out and they hand you a clue about the others, so the puzzle opens up one person at a time. The rule that makes it special is that you can never convict on a hunch: every mark has to be proven. It starts gentle on Monday and gets harder through the week.

So a good alternative has one answer you can prove without guessing, clear facts to reason from, and a size that fits a coffee break. Some below are mysteries, some pure logic, and some put people on a map.

8 free games like Clues by Sam

Lie of Sight

Ember Works LLC · Any browser, phone or computer

Our own game, so take this one with a pinch of salt. Each case is a room seen from above. Each of the Fibberson family says what they could or couldn’t see from where they stood, and exactly one is lying. Move them around until every honest story fits at once: the liar’s story is the one that never can.

Murdle

G. T. Karber · Browser; books

A daily mystery on a logic grid. Each puzzle is a tiny story with a few suspects, weapons and places, and a grid where you cross off what can’t be true until one answer is left. If you like Clues by Sam’s careful pace, it will feel familiar.

Murdoku

Manuel Garand · Browser; books

Sudoku’s placement logic, with suspects instead of numbers. You get a drawn map of a crime scene split into rooms, and each suspect’s clue says where they stood or what they stood beside. Every row and column holds one person, and the killer is whoever ends up alone with the victim. New web puzzles come out each week, and there are books.

Cozy Culprits

Alejandro Portillo Guerrero · iPhone and iPad; browser as Murder Sudoku

A daily case in a manor house, at three levels, built on the same placement idea: six suspects, no two sharing a row or column, and the one left in the victim’s room is guilty. It is an iPhone and iPad app, and the same daily plays in a browser on the Murder Sudoku site.

Mystery-o-matic

An open-source project · Browser

A small, open-source daily mystery. You read a set of clues and fill in a table of who was in which room at what time, until the killer, the weapon and the time fall out. Its makers say a case takes under five minutes, which makes it a good first puzzle of the morning.

Queens

LinkedIn · Browser or the LinkedIn app

Not a mystery, but the same pleasure of one provable answer. Each day you crown one square in every row, column and color region, and no two crowns may touch. Pure elimination, with no story attached.

Puzzle Baron’s Logic Puzzles

Puzzle Baron · Browser, tablet apps, printable

The classic logic grid, in bulk: a list of clues and a grid for matching up names, places and things, with more than 25,000 to play whenever one daily puzzle isn’t enough.

Daily Detective

FlyingLooper · Browser

A daily murder case with a move limit. You question suspects, look at the evidence and hunt for the statement that contradicts the others, all within ten moves. The daily case is free, with an optional paid tier.

How Lie of Sight compares with Clues by Sam

Both are daily, free and fair: no luck, no guessing, one answer you can prove. The difference is how the clues reach you.

In Clues by Sam the clues are sentences you read. In Lie of Sight they are pictures. Each of the family notices things by one rule: Dad sees his whole row and column, the Kid does too but low furniture blocks him, Grandma sees only two squares around her, and Rex the dog goes by smell. So “I saw the clock” really means “I stood somewhere with the clock in view”, and you test it by dragging that person around the room.

The other difference is the question. Clues by Sam asks you to sort everyone. Lie of Sight asks you to find one liar: the person whose story can’t be true while everyone else’s is.

In the seven days to 8 October 2026, 218 of the 228 answers given on the daily case were right, about 96%: the puzzle is fair, not a trick. A case takes 2 to 5 minutes, and you can play it in a browser with no sign-up.

The conservatory from above: potted plants, a bed of tulips, a long wooden bench, a small table, an armchair, a rug and a ball, with nobody in it yet.
Every Lie of Sight case is a room seen from above. This is the conservatory, before the family walks in.
