Play Daily #38About this case
Daily #38 is set in the porch: a 6 × 6 board, 26 squares of floor with one short wall inside. Whoever gets to the porch first on a sunny day keeps the best seat until suppertime. This is the second daily case in the porch. Four of the Fibbersons were there: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. One of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who chalked a hopscotch on the porch? Their stories turn on the plant, the newspaper and the cake, and on each other. Move them around the porch until every story fits but one.

In the room
- Plant tall
- Porch swing low
- Newspaper flat
- Cake low
- Bench low
- Ball flat
Tall here: the plant. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Low: the porch swing, the cake and the bench. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. The newspaper and the ball lie flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: ten of the board’s 36 squares are cut away.
How they see in here
In the porch, Dad looks along a row of six squares and a column of six, and a wall or something tall cuts either one short.
The Kid is the shortest of the family: in the porch, everything low blocks his view as well as everything tall.
Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.
Rex sniffs rather than looks, and only the eight squares touching his own; not even a wall stops his nose.
Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.
A tip for this room
Mind the cut-away squares: some rows and columns in the porch are shorter than the board’s 6 × 6 suggests.
