About this case

Daily #36 takes you into the kitchen, a 6 × 5 board with four short walls inside. Every crumb in the kitchen tells a story. This is the third daily case in the kitchen. Four of the Fibbersons were there: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. One of them is fibbing. Everyone wants to know: Who put the cereal box back with no cereal in it? What they say is about the clock, the plant and the vase, and about each other. Move them around the kitchen until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Fridge tall
  • Counter low
  • Stove tall
  • Clock tall
  • Plant tall
  • Table low
  • Vase low
  • Cookie jar low

The tall things in the kitchen: the fridge, the stove, the clock and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. Low: the counter, the table, the vase and the cookie jar. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: six of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid is the shortest of the family: in the kitchen, everything low blocks his view as well as everything tall.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex sniffs rather than looks, and only the eight squares touching his own; not even a wall stops his nose.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Start with the tightest story. Grandma sees only two squares each way, so anything she saw was close to her.
