About this case

Daily #35 is set in the pantry: a 5 × 6 board, 25 squares of floor with one short wall inside. Every snack in the house lives in here, and everybody pretends not to know where. It’s the second daily set here. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who opened the new cereal? What they say is about the jam jar, the cereal box, the cake and the mousetrap, and about each other. Try them in different squares of the pantry until only one story can’t be made to fit.

In the room

  • Pantry shelf tall
  • Snack shelf tall
  • Jam jar low
  • Step stool low
  • Cereal box low
  • Cake low
  • Mousetrap flat

The tall things in the pantry: the pantry shelf and the snack shelf. Every pair of eyes stops there. Down at the Kid’s height there are the jam jar, the step stool, the cereal box and the cake, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. Flat on the floor: the mousetrap, which blocks nobody. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: five of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 5 squares across and 6 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma sees two squares in every direction, diagonals too, and walls and tall things stop her.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the pantry blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Mind the cut-away squares: some rows and columns in the pantry are shorter than the board’s 5 × 6 suggests.
