About this case

Daily #37 takes you into the living room, a 6 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Sunday afternoons happen in the living room: board games, naps and debates about what to watch. It’s the fourth daily set here. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The day’s question: Who scattered cake crumbs on the good cushions? What they saw, or didn’t, is about the plant, the vase and the ball, and each other. Place them in the living room so every story fits but one, and that one is your answer.

In the room

  • Plant tall
  • Clock tall
  • Bookshelf tall
  • Vase low
  • Rug flat
  • Sofa low
  • Ball flat

Tall here: the plant, the clock and the bookshelf. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Down at the Kid’s height there are the vase and the sofa, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. The rug and the ball lie flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: one of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 6 squares across and 5 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.

  • The Kid is the shortest of the family: in the living room, everything low blocks his view as well as everything tall.

  • Grandma sees two squares in every direction, diagonals too, and walls and tall things stop her.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the living room blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Count the walls first. Each of the three short walls in the living room cuts a row or column in two for everyone who looks, but Rex smells straight through them.
