About this case

Daily #40 takes you into the bathroom, a 5 × 5 board with two short walls inside. The floor is always a little wet, and someone has always forgotten to hang up a towel. This is the third daily case in the bathroom. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. Everyone wants to know: Who dropped a soggy towel on the bath mat? What they say is about the rubber duck, the plant and the sweater, and about each other. Move them around the bathroom until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Cabinet tall
  • Bathtub low
  • Rubber duck low
  • Plant tall
  • Sweater flat

Tall here: the cabinet and the plant. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. The bathtub and the rubber duck are low: they block the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else. Underfoot: the sweater, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 5 squares across and 5 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.

  • The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.

  • Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the bathroom.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the bathroom blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

On a small board like this one (5 × 5), rows and columns cross a lot, so one move can change several stories at once.
