About this case

For Daily #45, the family is in the Kid's bedroom, on a 5 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Whispers and giggles carry from this room long after lights out. This is the third daily case in the Kid's bedroom. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The day’s question: Who squeezed the teddy into a doll's sweater? Their stories turn on the teddy and the globe, and on each other. Move them around the Kid's bedroom until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Bed low
  • Bookshelf tall
  • Teddy flat
  • Toy chest low
  • Ball flat
  • Globe low

Tall here: the bookshelf. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Low: the bed, the toy chest and the globe. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. The teddy and the ball lie flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: one of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • In the Kid's bedroom, Dad looks along a row of five squares and a column of five, and a wall or something tall cuts either one short.

  • The Kid is the shortest of the family: in the Kid's bedroom, everything low blocks his view as well as everything tall.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the Kid's bedroom blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

“Didn’t see” is evidence too. Someone who missed a thing is out of its line of sight, or something blocks the view.
