About this case

Daily #42 takes you into the dining room, a 6 × 5 board with two short walls inside. The dining room is for best: the good napkins, the good plates and the good behavior. It’s the fourth daily set here. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The day’s question: Who trimmed the dining-room plant into a dinosaur? What they saw, or didn’t, is about the clock, the plant and the cake, and each other. Place them in the dining room so every story fits but one, and that one is your answer.

In the room

  • Cabinet tall
  • Clock tall
  • Plant tall
  • Long table low
  • Cake low
  • Vase low

The tall things in the dining room: the cabinet, the clock and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. The long table, the cake and the vase are low: they block the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the dining room.

  • Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Make every story fit at once. When you can do that for all but one, with everyone placed, that one is the odd story out.
