Who left the hose running?

Play Daily #43About this case
Daily #43 takes you into the garden, a 6 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Every flower out here is counted each morning, petal by petal. The family has been here for three earlier dailys. Four of the Fibbersons were there: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. One of them is fibbing. The day’s question: Who left the hose running? Their stories turn on the plant, the tulips and the rain boots, and on each other. Move them around the garden until every story fits but one.

In the room
- Hedge tall
- Plant tall
- Bench low
- Garden gnome low
- Tulips flat
- Rain boots flat
Tall here: the hedge and the plant. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Down at the Kid’s height there are the bench and the garden gnome, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. The tulips and the rain boots lie flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.
How they see in here
Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 6 squares across and 5 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.
The Kid is the shortest of the family: in the garden, everything low blocks his view as well as everything tall.
Grandma sees two squares in every direction, diagonals too, and walls and tall things stop her.
Rex sniffs rather than looks, and only the eight squares touching his own; not even a wall stops his nose.
Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.
A tip for this room
“Didn’t see” is evidence too. Someone who missed a thing is out of its line of sight, or something blocks the view.
