Play Daily #48About this case
Daily #48 opens the door on the playroom, 23 squares of floor on a 5 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Every drawing in here has the family dog in it, whether he agreed to pose or not. The family has been here for two earlier dailys. Four of the Fibbersons were there: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. One of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who rang the bike bell till everyone's ears rang? Their stories turn on the bike and the teddy, and on each other. Move them around the playroom until every story fits but one.

In the room
- Easel tall
- Toy box low
- Bike low
- Teddy flat
- Plant tall
The easel and the plant are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. Low: the toy box and the bike. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. Underfoot: the teddy, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.
How they see in here
In the playroom, Dad looks along a row of five squares and a column of five, and a wall or something tall cuts either one short.
The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.
Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.
Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.
Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.
A tip for this room
Rex’s nose is the shortest reach in the house: anything he smelled was right next to him. That leaves few squares to try.
