About this case

Daily #46 opens the door on the garage, 28 squares of floor on a 6 × 5 board with three short walls inside. It’s the clankiest room in the house, and the proudest. It’s the third daily set here. Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex were all there, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who opened the paint can with Dad's best screwdriver? What they saw, or didn’t, is about the trunk, the bike and the rain boots, and each other. Place them in the garage so every story fits but one, and that one is your answer.

In the room

  • Tool wall tall
  • Workbench low
  • Boxes tall
  • Trunk low
  • Bike low
  • Rain boots flat

The tool wall and the boxes are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. Low: the workbench, the trunk and the bike. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. Underfoot: the rain boots, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the garage.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the garage blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Rex’s nose is the shortest reach in the house: anything he smelled was right next to him. That leaves few squares to try.
