About this case

For Daily #47, the family is in the stairwell, on a 6 × 6 board with one short wall inside. The stairwell is narrow and steep, and it hears every late-night trip to the kitchen. It’s the fourth daily set here. Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex were all there, and one of them is fibbing. Everyone wants to know: Who stranded a pair of sneakers halfway up the stairs? What they say is about the clock and the sneakers, and about each other. Place them in the stairwell so every story fits but one, and that one is your answer.

In the room

  • Clock tall
  • Laundry basket low
  • Sneakers flat
  • Creaky step flat
  • Cabinet tall

Tall here: the clock and the cabinet. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Low: the laundry basket. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. Underfoot: the sneakers and the creaky step, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: 12 of the board’s 36 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 6 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the stairwell blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Start with the tightest story. Grandma sees only two squares each way, so anything she saw was close to her.
