Who bounced the ball off the mantel vase?

Play Daily #25About this case
Daily #25 opens the door on the living room, 29 squares of floor on a 6 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Everything in the living room has been sat on, napped on or lost behind something. The family has been here for two earlier dailys. Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex were all there, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who bounced the ball off the mantel vase? Their stories turn on the clock and the ball, and on each other. Move them around the living room until every story fits but one.

In the room
- Bookshelf tall
- Clock tall
- Plant tall
- Rug flat
- Cake low
- Ball flat
- Sofa low
The tall things in the living room: the bookshelf, the clock and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. The cake and the sofa are low: they block the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else. Flat on the floor: the rug and the ball, which block nobody. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: one of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.
How they see in here
Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.
The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.
Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the living room.
Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.
Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.
A tip for this room
Mind the cut-away squares: some rows and columns in the living room are shorter than the board’s 6 × 5 suggests.
