About this case

Daily #28 opens the door on the kitchen, 28 squares of floor on a 6 × 5 board with four short walls inside. Something is always baking in the kitchen, and someone is always hovering nearby. It’s the second daily set here. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. On the case file: Who ate the last cookie? What they saw, or didn’t, is about the plant, the clock and the cookie jar, and each other. Try them in different squares of the kitchen until only one story can’t be made to fit.

In the room

  • Plant tall
  • Clock tall
  • Stove tall
  • Counter low
  • Fridge tall
  • Table low
  • Cake low
  • Cookie jar low

The plant, the clock, the stove and the fridge are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. Down at the Kid’s height there are the counter, the table, the cake and the cookie jar, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • In the kitchen, Dad looks along a row of six squares and a column of five, and a wall or something tall cuts either one short.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma sees two squares in every direction, diagonals too, and walls and tall things stop her.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the kitchen blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Low things are where the Kid and Dad part ways: the Kid’s view stops at them and Dad’s doesn’t. A square that works for one may not work for the other.
