Who dropped a sock on every step?

Play Daily #26About this case
Daily #26 takes you into the stairwell, a 6 × 6 board with two short walls inside. Sound carries up and down the stairwell, so getting anywhere quietly takes skill. This is the second daily case in the stairwell. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The day’s question: Who dropped a sock on every step? Their stories turn on the clock, the sneakers and the creaky step, and on each other. Try them in different squares of the stairwell until only one story can’t be made to fit.

In the room
- Clock tall
- Laundry basket low
- Sneakers flat
- Creaky step flat
- Cabinet tall
The clock and the cabinet are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. The laundry basket is low: it blocks the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else. Flat on the floor: the sneakers and the creaky step, which block nobody. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: 13 of the board’s 36 squares are cut away.
How they see in here
Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 6 squares across and 6 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.
The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.
Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the stairwell.
Rex sniffs rather than looks, and only the eight squares touching his own; not even a wall stops his nose.
Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.
A tip for this room
Count the walls first. Each of the two short walls in the stairwell cuts a row or column in two for everyone who looks, but Rex smells straight through them.
