About this case

Daily #41 opens the door on Grandpa's Study, 23 squares of floor on a 5 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Grandpa’s study is hushed and grand, all leather, ink and old maps. It’s the fifth daily set here. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who folded down the corners of the atlas? What they say is about the clock, the globe, the vase and the plant, and about each other. Place them in Grandpa's Study so every story fits but one, and that one is your answer.

In the room

  • Bookshelf tall
  • Clock tall
  • Desk low
  • Globe low
  • Rug flat
  • Vase low
  • Plant tall

Tall here: the bookshelf, the clock and the plant. Tall things block every view, though not Rex’s nose. Low: the desk, the globe and the vase. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. Underfoot: the rug, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 5 squares across and 5 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in Grandpa's Study.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in Grandpa's Study blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Mind the cut-away squares: some rows and columns in Grandpa's Study are shorter than the board’s 5 × 5 suggests.
