About this case

For Daily #33, the family is in Grandpa's Study, on a 5 × 5 board with three short walls inside. It’s the quietest room in the house, unless Grandpa is telling a story. The family has been here for three earlier dailys. Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex were all there, and one of them is fibbing. Everyone wants to know: Who spun the globe and lost Grandpa's place? What they saw, or didn’t, is about the clock, the globe, the trunk and the plant, and each other. Move them around Grandpa's Study until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Bookshelf tall
  • Clock tall
  • Desk low
  • Globe low
  • Rug flat
  • Trunk low
  • Plant tall

The tall things in Grandpa's Study: the bookshelf, the clock and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. Down at the Kid’s height there are the desk, the globe and the trunk, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. The rug lies flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 5 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

On a small board like this one (5 × 5), rows and columns cross a lot, so one move can change several stories at once.
