About this case

Daily #34 opens the door on the garden, 28 squares of floor on a 6 × 5 board with two short walls inside. Out in the garden the grass is soft, the sun is warm and somebody is always where they shouldn’t be. This is the third daily case in the garden. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who gave Gordon the gnome a hat? What they say is about the plant, the garden gnome and the rain boots, and about each other. Try them in different squares of the garden until only one story can’t be made to fit.

In the room

  • Hedge tall
  • Plant tall
  • Garden gnome low
  • Bench low
  • Tulips flat
  • Rain boots flat

The tall things in the garden: the hedge and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. The garden gnome and the bench are low: they block the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else. Flat on the floor: the tulips and the rain boots, which block nobody. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 6 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma is nearsighted: two squares along each of her eight directions and no further, anywhere in the garden.

  • Rex the dog goes by his nose. He smells the eight squares next to him, and nothing in the garden blocks a smell.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Rex’s nose is the shortest reach in the house: anything he smelled was right next to him. That leaves few squares to try.
