About this case

Daily #31 opens the door on the dining room, 28 squares of floor on a 6 × 5 board with two short walls inside. Whoever sits at the wobbly end gets extra dessert for being brave. The family has been here for two earlier dailys. Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex were all there, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who fed the sprouts to the dog? Their stories turn on the plant, the cake and the vase, and on each other. Move them around the dining room until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Cabinet tall
  • Clock tall
  • Plant tall
  • Long table low
  • Cake low
  • Vase low

The cabinet, the clock and the plant are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. Low: the long table, the cake and the vase. Only the Kid’s view stops at a low thing; the grown-ups see right over. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: two of the board’s 30 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • In the dining room, Dad looks along a row of six squares and a column of five, and a wall or something tall cuts either one short.

  • The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex sniffs rather than looks, and only the eight squares touching his own; not even a wall stops his nose.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Mind the cut-away squares: some rows and columns in the dining room are shorter than the board’s 6 × 5 suggests.
