About this case

Daily #29 is set in the hallway: a 6 × 4 board, 23 squares of floor with four short walls inside. Coats, scarves and footprints: the hallway collects a little of everyone. This is the second daily case in the hallway. On the case: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. Each says what they saw, and one of them is fibbing. The case file asks: Who left the front door wide open? Their stories turn on the plant, the rain boots and the ball, and on each other. Move them around the hallway until every story fits but one.

In the room

  • Plant tall
  • Rain boots flat
  • Coat rack tall
  • Rug flat
  • Bench low
  • Ball flat

The plant and the coat rack are tall, so nobody sees past them, but Rex smells straight through. The bench is low: it blocks the Kid, who’s short, and nobody else. Underfoot: the rain boots, the rug and the ball, flat, in nobody’s way. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: one of the board’s 24 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad looks straight along his row and column; on this board that’s 6 squares across and 4 down, unless a wall or something tall stops him.

  • The Kid looks along his row and column like Dad, but the room’s low things block him too.

  • Grandma sees two squares in every direction, diagonals too, and walls and tall things stop her.

  • Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

Rex’s nose is the shortest reach in the house: anything he smelled was right next to him. That leaves few squares to try.
