About this case

For Daily #30, the family is in the laundry, on a 5 × 5 board with three short walls inside. Odd socks go missing in here and are never seen again. This is the fourth daily case in the laundry. Four of the Fibbersons were there: Dad, the Kid, Grandma and Rex. One of them is fibbing. Everyone wants to know: Who overloaded the washer till it wobbled? Their stories turn on the plant, the teddy and the ball, and on each other. Try them in different squares of the laundry until only one story can’t be made to fit.

In the room

  • Washing machine tall
  • Cabinet tall
  • Plant tall
  • Laundry basket low
  • Counter low
  • Teddy flat
  • Ball flat

The tall things in the laundry: the washing machine, the cabinet and the plant. Every pair of eyes stops there. Down at the Kid’s height there are the laundry basket and the counter, low enough for Dad and Grandma to see over. The teddy and the ball lie flat: everyone sees straight past. The room isn’t a plain rectangle: one of the board’s 25 squares are cut away.

How they see in here

  • Dad sees his whole row and column, 5 squares across and 5 down, until a wall or something tall gets in the way.

  • The Kid sees his row and column too, but he’s short, so the low things in here stop him as well as the tall ones.

  • Grandma sees only two squares each way, eight ways round, diagonals included; walls and tall things block her.

  • Rex can’t see at all: he smells the eight squares around him, straight through walls and furniture.

Every rule, with pictures, is in How to play.

A tip for this room

On a small board like this one (5 × 5), rows and columns cross a lot, so one move can change several stories at once.
